2009 Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards Evening

The Hot Dip Galvanizers Association of Southern Africa hosted the tenth Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards Evening on Friday 28 August in The Ballroom of Montecasino. Thank you to this year’s sponsors - (in alphabetical order) Armco Galvanizers, Bulldog Projects, Exxaro – Zincor Ltd, Galvrite Galvanising, Harrismith Galvanizing, Metsep (Pty) Ltd and Robor Galvanizers.

The winner of the Walter Barnett Trophy proved to be an excellent example which encompasses all the characteristics of hot dip galvanized steel, including longevity and cost effective economics. The purpose of these Awards is to celebrate achievements and to raise awareness and passion of just what can be achieved.

The winners of the 2009 Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards are as follows (listed according to categories):

Winner of the Walter Barnett Trophy (Overall Winner) & Architectural Category: The National Library

The new National Library incorporates a four-storey building, including a raised public piazza leading to the entrance, hot dip galvanized steel and glass covered walkways and ramps and double-volume reading rooms with views onto the streets.

The winner of the Walter Barnett Trophy proved to be an excellent example which embodied all the characteristics of hot dip galvanized steel as a material of construction.

The client’s specification stipulated that materials of construction provide for a maintenance free service life, effective economics, environmental compatibility and demanding quality standards required to achieve the aesthetic finishings.

The final structure was designed to represent the colours of a South African countrywide experience; dark granite with harmonious brickwork, openness to reflect the sky and the robust finishes of hot dip galvanized steel as a symbol of energy and emotional toughness.

When determining the overall winner, one must identify the exceptional as a critical factor. This year’s winning project is a reflection of the people of South Africa, an icon to the International community promoting an era of development, renewal, national learning and advancement.

Architectural Category Comments: This project emerged as a clear and undisputed winner in that it represents an exceptional example of how hot dip galvanizing was used to blend into the overall aesthetics of the envisaged project theme. Furthermore the submission scored well in both the celebration of superiority and the promoting of the benefits of hot dip galvanizing that meet the demands of architectural quality.

Duplex Coating Systems Category: Potsdam Wastewater Treatment Works


A duplex coating applied to steelwork for protection against an extremely harsh environment for the Potsdam Wastewater Treatment Works Settling Tanks, located in the Western Cape.

The adjudicators were very impressed with this particular submission due to its detailed technical information and attention given to supporting documents. Furthermore this submission scored particularly well with its professional approach, superior finish and the service to the community.

Export Category: The Moroccan Grand Prix


The off-site manufacturing and hot dip galvanizing of 20 moulds for concrete crash barriers, debris fencing panels, three-storey control tower, two-storey pit structure with VIP suites, over-track gantry for start lights, starter stand for controls and demarcation brackets for crowd control.

The winner of the Export category scored particularly well as a professional project that provided a first class service and superior quality. This project will promote market growth on an international scale, with significant benefits to the client in terms of long term corrosion control and maintenance free performance.

Infrastructural Development Category: Bosal House of Irrigation


An export order of a hot dip galvanized irrigation system for two privately owned sugar estates.

In this case the long term professional relationship with the client has led to market growth. In addition, consistent service has skillfully promoted the benefits of hot dip galvanized steel. This particular submission successfully exploited the characteristics of the use of hot dip galvanizing as a corrosion protection system.

Mining and Industrial Category: Steam Condensing Radiator


The hot dip galvanizing of three 5-ton steam condensing radiators.

This submission was considered as outstanding due to the fact that it illustrated and promoted the benefits of hot dip galvanizing of exceptionally large items and the difficulties related to the process. Special effort was made by the galvanizer with the designing of special jigging equipment in order to enable the process.

Community Development Category: The Reichenau Mill Restoration Project


The restoration of the Reichenau Mill.

The restoration of this potential tourist attraction illustrated great promise as a promotional project for hot dip galvanized steel. In addition it celebrates the superiority of the process for corrosion control that will result in long term sustainable resources. Using hot dip galvanized steel will extend the service life of this project by more than 70 years.
