The 2003 Eskom Industrelek Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards
The Hot Dip Galvanizers Association Southern Africa hosted the Eskom Industrelek Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards Evening on
Friday the 15th August 2003 at the Crowne Plaza in Sandton. Sponsored by Eskom Industrelek since it’s inception in 2000,
this evening was attended by the members of the Association and their guests. Robby Schlemmer, baggage master of the Under
21 Rugby Team was the Master of Ceremonies and musical entertainment was provided by Brian Harvard.
Laetitia van Staden, Senior Manager – Strategic Marketing Intelligence of Eskom Industrelek opened the proceedings. According to Ms Van Staden, "Eskom Industrelek as its name implies, focuses on those industries where electricity is an important input in their process. Over the past years Eskom has managed to keep the price of electricity below that of most other countries and this has benefited local industries. The hot dip galvanizing industry is one of Industrelek’s most important customers and we are working on projects which will be communicated to you through the Association. On the horizon there are other challenges awaiting us: The restructuring of the electricity industry, the management of electricity demand during peak periods of the day and later the supply of new generating capacity." Van Staden went on to say that Eskom Industrelek have modernised their logo to keep up with the changing times. Eskom Industrelek have enjoyed sharing in the achievements of the Association over the past years, and feel that the awards evening is one of the highlights on the Industrelek calendar; when Industrelek celebrate achievements, gain inspiration, stare in amazement at cost-effective solutions, admire the standards of the industry and … truly enjoy themselves. 15 Submissions were received this year with all the categories being represented. The panel of judges has agreed that no winner of the Merit category would be awarded. The Association would like to thank the panel for their time and commitment to hot dip galvanizing. Members of the judging panel are: Dr Hennie de Clercq, Executive Director, SAISC; Dr Willem van Niekerk, General Manager, Zincor; Bob Andrew, Bob Andrew Consulting Value Engineers and Honourary Life Member of the Association; Prof. Hans Wegelin, Architect and Associate Professor, Department Architecture, Pretoria University; and Neil Macleod, Managing Director, Pure Consulting. Winner - The St Helena Bay Harbour Project Galvanizer - Cape Galvanizing (Pty) Ltd This project involved the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment. Located in the Southern and Western Cape region, it involved 40 tonnes of steel to be hot dip galvanized. The steelwork included a trailer-like section that is actually totally immersed in seawater. Once the fishing boat has been floated onto the trailer the whole unit is then winched out of the sea to commence maintenance of the vessel. The rails that carry the entire structure out of the sea were also hot dip galvanized and left unpainted.

Novel Applications
Winner - The Loch Vaal River Cruiser Galvanizer - Robor Galvanisers This is a barge constructed entirely of steel sheeting which is hot dip galvanized. Not wanting the inconvenience of launching this barge every time Mr. Jordaan, the owner, spent time on his property, the barge would require adequate protection allowing it to be kept in water permanently. The galvanizer, Robor Galvanisers encouraged the client to have the deck and roofing hot dip galvanized, thus providing a complete maintenance free barge with regards to corrosion.
