The 2002 Industrelek Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards
On Friday August 16, 2002 the 3rd annual Industrelek Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards was held at the Crowne Plaza in Sandton. Fanie de Villiers was MC for the evening, and kept everyone entertained with his interesting cricketing stories.
The winners of the 2002 Industrelek Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards evening were as follows: The winners of the 2002 Eskom Industrelek Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards are as follows (listed according to categories): |

Duplex Category
Winner - Unilever Galvanizer - Phoenix Galvanizing The concept of this structure includes a tree with branches rising up in order to support the pyramid skylights and cantilever extensions of post-tension slabs. There is also architectural columns in place to support a sea view glass façade offering a panoramic view, with bold columns tapering to swiveling bases and arms carrying canopy rafters. This all contributes to an open-air feeling, with the abundance of light creating an environment resembling the outdoors. There is a breathtaking view of the ocean with limited obstruction and an internal boardwalk without support columns that makes the eyes reel in visual wonder. The clever use of hot dip technology counters the usual pitfalls of construction in close proximity of the ocean and direct sea breezes, with the entire project being duplex coated after completion.

Novel Applications
Winner - Cochrane Longlife Posts Galvanizer - Armco Galvanizers This is a revolutionary design concept in the post and fencing genre. It has been patented and offers an attractive, not to mention more durable, alternative to the standard tubular post. It is available both locally and exported - creating a brand that is ultra-tough and aesthetically pleasing. Not only does the concept carry with it anti-corrosive properties, it also weighs a lot less than the traditional tubular post due to it’s structural design - a great advantage in transport.

Mining and Industrial Category
Winner - Tubular Track Galvanizer - Galvadip The railway industry, faced with ever increasing competition from other modes of transport, has come under pressure to increase the efficiency of rolling stock and the maintenance of the track. There is interest in moving away from traditional ballasted or dynamic track systems, towards a more rigid structure. This system is comprised of a continuous beam track system using no sleepers or ballast. Tubular Track has been developed entirely in South Africa and has been in operation for the past 14 years. Due to the superior stability, the system is used in harsh environments, such as mining installations, wash bays, coal loading facilities, and very wet areas - harsh corrosion areas - hot dip galvanizing has proved to be the only corrosion protection method that meets its requirements.

Architectural Category
Winner - Athlone Stadium Re-Development Galvanizer - Cape Galvanising The existing west stand structure of the Athlone Stadium was modified, as part of the re-development. The duration of the contract, carried out during the Cape Town winter months, was for a period of 4 months and a further 140 tons of galvanized structural steel was used in the grandstand building.

Special Commendation
Winner - Identification Tag and Database System Galvanizer - Robor Galvanisers Because of it’s outstanding contribution to the industry, as well as it’s uniqueness, a special award has been awarded. This award is based on the use of a sophisticated management system and has significantly improved the level of service to the customer, providing users with added confidence to use hot dip galvanizing on larger projects |

Overall Winner of the HDGASA 2002 Awards
Winner - Refurbished Scaffolding Galvanizer - ConGalv A lot of research went into this outstanding project. First, a detailed cost analysis was done to compare the long-term cost-effectiveness and savings of hot dip galvanizing compared to painting. The revolutionary results showed that the payback period when using the process of hot dip galvanizing, depending on frequency of use, varies between six months and a maximum of three years!. To date, approximately 65% of the re-furbished scaffolding have been galvanized and all newly produced scaffolding is being galvanized before being erected. ConGalv not only focused on the hot dip galvanizing of the material but played a pivotal role in implementing an infrastructure to successfully refurbish and galvanize existing scaffolding. The implementation and manufacture of new pallets was outsourced and then galvanized for easier storage and handling. They also implemented transportation via a shuttle service, heat treatment and shot blasting (various methods used in the removal of old paint, rust and mortar was researched and then outsourced), colour coding was implemented to distinguish between the various companies operating on a single site, different lengths and scaffolding products, and finally also implementing effective means of communication.
The chief judge for the evening was Dr. Hennie de Clerq, Executive Director of the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction; the other judges included Ewald Meyer, Managing Director of the Zinc Corporation of South Africa Ltd; Bob Andrew of Bob Andrew Consulting Value Engineers, Alvin Roon of Waterston Weyer Roon Architects and Al Stratford of Stratford Architects, overall winner of last year’s Awards. All in all 25 admissions were received and the entrants were of a high standard, as usual. |
